Bill Overview
Title: End Tuberculosis Now Act of 2022
Description: This bill authorizes actions, including the provision of international assistance, to combat tuberculosis. The President may provide international assistance for the prevention, treatment, control, and elimination of tuberculosis. The President must also establish goals for U.S. efforts to detect, cure, and prevent all forms of tuberculosis globally by updating the U.S. Government Tuberculosis Strategy (2015-2019) and the National Action Plan for Combating Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis. The Government Accountability Office must periodically report to Congress on the impact of efforts to combat tuberculosis that are supported by U.S. bilateral assistance.
Sponsors: Rep. Bera, Ami [D-CA-7]
Target Audience
Population: People affected by tuberculosis globally
Estimated Size: 9000
- Tuberculosis is a global infectious disease affecting millions worldwide, with high prevalence in developing countries.
- Global efforts to combat tuberculosis will impact healthcare systems, providers, and patients in countries with high TB rates.
- International funding and assistance programs from countries like the US play a significant role in these efforts.
- The global population affected by TB includes patients, healthcare workers, and communities at risk of TB infection.
- Efforts to control and eliminate TB will improve health outcomes and reduce the spread of TB.
Reasoning
- The policy focuses on international efforts, which may not directly impact a large portion of the U.S. population immediately. However, there would be indirect benefits to U.S. citizens through improved global health security and possibly reduced domestic cases due to global eradication strategies.
- Healthcare workers and those involved in public health or organizations related to global health might feel a stronger impact due to increased funding opportunities and resources to combat TB.
- General population's awareness of tuberculosis might not significantly increase, but public health communications might emphasize on TB detection and prevention due to policy strategies.
- The size of the U.S. population directly involved in TB-related healthcare is relatively small, so direct impact is not widespread.
- Expect minor long-term benefits in terms of wellbeing due to improved global health landscape, which can indirectly contribute to overall national wellbeing.
